Three groups are available to cater for differing fitness levels.
Walking Group 3 is for members who want a more challenging walk than the 6-7 miles of Walking Group 2.
We aim to walk 12 miles twice a month and from time to time might tackle a longer route over several days. We walk locally on the Downs and may venture further afield when weather and longer daylight hours allow. We may share cars to get to and from walks but, as our walks may start and finish in different places, we also use trains and buses when necessary.
As well as walking longer distances, we may also tackle more challenging terrain and conditions (it gets muddy out there!). Walkers need to be able to maintain a reasonably brisk pace for 5 or 6 hours to fit 12 miles or so into daylight hours in winter, and we may have to use infrequent rural buses and train services for connections.
Rather than taking long pub lunch breaks and getting stiff, we usually carry snacks and a picnic lunch to sustain us. We do try to end walks with a celebration tea together.
We completed the South Downs Way in a series of weekly walks in the autumn of 2013, 2014 and 2015. (Click here to view the U3A South Downs Walk web-page.) There may be opportunities to tackle other long distance paths in future.
Anyone is welcome to try one of our walks. You may surprise yourself. If you are unsure of your ability to walk 12 miles, as many of us were, contact Rob Doe about trying a WG3 walk where there is the option of dropping out and catching the bus home half way, if you find the distance or pace not to your liking.
Walking Group 3 walks are usually held on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month.
